THE POWER OF SIMPLY LISTENING: FINDING STILLNESS IN THE NOISE

In a world that demands we be constantly available, informed, and "on," silence has become an endangered commodity. We are conditioned to fill every gap in our day with the hum of notifications, the buzz of background media, or the internal dialogue of our next to-do list.
Â
But there is a profound, quiet strength in learning to listen - not just to the world around us, but to the space between the thoughts.
Â
During my time as a Samaritan, I learned that listening is rarely about waiting for your turn to speak. It is an act of holding space. It is the ability to sit with someone, or with a situation, without the immediate urge to fix, change, or rationalise it. It is simply showing up, fully present, and allowing things to be exactly as they are.
Â
This practice is just as vital when applied to ourselves. How often do we truly listen to our own internal cues? We often push past fatigue, ignore the need for a slower pace, or suppress the quiet signals that we are running on empty.
Â
I’ve found that the process of creating - whether it’s blending essential oils or hand-pouring a candle, is a form of listening. It demands a pace that cannot be rushed. It requires me to pay attention to the subtle shifts in scent and the temperature of the wax. In those moments, the noise of the day fades, and I am left with the clarity that only comes from stillness.
Â
This week, I invite you to try a simple experiment. Find ten minutes of absolute silence. Put the phone in another room. Don't reach for a book or a podcast. Just sit. Listen to the rhythm of your own breath and the ambient sounds of your home.
Â
You don’t need to do anything with what you hear. Sometimes, the most meaningful thing we can do is simply listen, and let the rest of the world wait.
